THE REFUGEE HOTEL

Director’s note
The Refugee Hotel is the story of eight Chileans who were forced to make great sacrifices with fear, anger, hope and love in their hearts, during unfathomable times. March 19, 2020 students from East Los Angeles College and I were set to begin rehearsal for The Refugee Hotel by Carmen Aguirre. We started design sessions in December 2019 and worked our way up to the first day of rehearsal. The cast was in place, the designers were ready. Opening night was set for May 21, 2020. Then the most amazing thing happened.
Wading through the unknown, taking on new technologies, communicating from a distance, a group of students and the staff persisted, during unfathomable times. It is November 23, 2020 and it gives me joy to know that the great work that the actors and designers and the staff of the theatre department at East Los Angeles College, will finally be seen.
It is not the play, it is not theatre, it is but fifteen glimpses of what could have been, what we were working on together, and the determination theatre artists have, to tell the story.
I thank you all for your time, talent, strength, and bravery.
